Insist on a smart-toilet room

The single biggest quality-of-life upgrade is booking a hotel with an electric smart toilet seat (智能马桶). The Japan-style washlets — heated seat, warm-water spray, dryer — are far more common in modern Chinese hotels than you'd think. When booking, search "smart toilet" in the property description or reviews. The international chains and modern local brands in this city almost always have them.

Getting there & around

From the airport

Metro line 3 from CAN to Tiyu Xilu (¥8, 45 min) or to the airport. DiDi is ¥100-130. Avoid airport taxi touts — use the official queue.

Metro

16 lines. Less polished than Shanghai but works. English signage. Single ride ¥2-12.

Taxi

Metered, ¥12 flag fall. Drivers may speak Cantonese; Mandarin is fine. Always insist on the meter. We recommend using DiDi instead for a safer, scam-free experience.

We recommend using DiDi instead of taxis. We've had mixed experiences with taxis — DiDi offers a safer, worry-free, and scam-free experience.

DiDi

Works well. Connect a foreign card or use Alipay. Cheapest for non-Chinese speakers.

Tips

  • Avoid May–August — heavy rain and typhoon risk
  • Cantonese food is the lightest of the four great cuisines; lots of steaming and clear broths
  • DiDi to Foshan for a half-day trip — 30 min, lots of halal Cantonese food heritage

Common scams to avoid

Counterfeit goods in Beijing Road shops

Stores pushing 'Gucci' or 'Nike' bags with 'discount' pricing — all fake.

How to avoid: Shop at authorized malls (Grandview, Teem) for genuine goods.

Aggressive tea house touts

Young people on Beijing Road inviting you to a 'free' tea tasting, then a high bill.

How to avoid: Decline and keep walking. Real tea houses quote prices up front.

Unlicensed cabs at the airport

Drivers at the airport exit offering 'cheap' fixed-rate rides.

How to avoid: Use the official taxi queue or DiDi. Metro is the cheapest.
